Astrolabe with lunar gearing “MB 01” (14th cent.)

Brass instrument, weight approx. 560 g, diameter 133 mm


Replica after plans from the renowned Swiss astrolabe-maker Martin Brunold. This instrument is based on the "French" lunar gearing astrolabe in the Science Museum in London. Original instrument from ca. 1300 AD.

The unusual projection used in this instrument (projection and view from the North) shows the Southern celestial sphere as far as the Tropic of Cancer (outer edge). Two tympans with 4° almucantars (latitudes of 34°/38° and 50°/54°) and temporal hours. There are no azimuth lines.

Rete with positions of 22 stars and calendar circle (0° Aries = 14 March). Names of the months in Latin (originally French). The gearing is located on a double solar rule and connected to a lunar rule. The base of this gearing is a toothed ring covered by the outer ring of the rete.
