Arsenius Astrolabe “MB 97” (ca. 1550)

Brass instrument, weight approx. 800 g, diameter 157 mm


A replica after plans from the renowned Swiss astrolabe-maker Martin Brunold. This instrument is made in the style of Gualterus Arsenius, who worked in Louvain from 1557 to 1575. Flemish rete with positions of 37 stars and ecliptic/calendar circle.

3 tympans for the latitudes 39°, 42°, 45°, 48°, 51° and 54°, each with 3° almucantars, 5° lines of azimuth, unequal hours and scales showing astrological houses. Double rule with sights and declination scale.
